In short

Instagram Shared access lets people you invite post, comment and, if you allow it, answer your DMs from their own accounts. Meta lists it only in paid Meta One plans, from Advanced at $49.99 a month per profile, for up to 4 people. For most small teams, the free Meta Business Suite is the better way to share an inbox.

Shared access is Instagram’s way to let someone help run your account without knowing your password. Each person keeps their own login and switches into your account from theirs. You choose whether they also get your inbox and stories, and Account activity shows what they’ve done.

It isn’t free. Meta lists Shared access in its paid Meta One business plans, starting at $49.99 a month. Everything here follows Instagram’s Shared access help page and Meta’s plans page as of October 2026.

What Shared access lets people do

Once someone accepts your invite, they can switch to your account and act on it. They can:

  • Post, like and comment.
  • Boost posts.
  • Run ads and view insights, if yours is a business or creator account.

Two things stay off until you turn them on for each person: your inbox and your stories. So a new helper can post and reply to comments on day one, but they can’t read your DMs yet.

Everything they do shows up as your account. Customers see your name, not theirs. Anyone can open About this account on your profile and see that it’s shared.

What Shared access costs

Meta’s plans page lists Shared access in three Meta One business plans. The cheaper Essential plan ($14.99) doesn’t include it.

Meta One planPeople you can invitePrice per month (US, October 2026)
AdvancedUp to 4$49.99
ExpertUp to 8$149
MaxUp to 30$499

Each price covers one Facebook Page, Instagram profile or WhatsApp Business number. Two locations with their own Instagram accounts pay twice. Prices vary by country, so check the amount in the app before you subscribe.

If you cancel, everyone you invited loses access.

How to give someone Shared access on Instagram

You do this in the Instagram app on your phone.

  1. Tap your profile picture in the bottom right.
  2. Tap Menu (the three lines) in the top right. This opens Settings and activity.
  3. Tap Shared access, then Invite people.
  4. Search for the person’s Instagram account, select them and tap Continue if it appears.
  5. Tap Send invite.

They get a notification and have 7 days to accept. You’ll hear back when they accept or decline, or when the invite expires. An expired invite can be sent again.

Give someone access to your DMs

Inbox access is separate, so a teammate who answers customers needs one more step:

  1. Go back to Shared access.
  2. Under Manage, tap Inbox access.
  3. Turn on the toggle next to their name, then tap Allow.

With inbox access, they can read, send and answer messages and make or take calls. It also includes your chats with Meta AI, so check those before you turn it on. Once inbox access is on, people you chat with can see that your account is shared.

Story access works the same way. Under Manage, tap Story access and turn it on for anyone who should add to your stories.

Steps in the Instagram app: Menu, Shared access, Inbox access, then turn on access for a teammate.

See what each person did

On the Shared access screen, tap Account activity to see actions taken by everyone you’ve invited. To check one person, tap the three dots next to their name, then Account activity. It lists things like shared posts and reels, comments, likes and new follows, and you can download it.

Instagram notes that the people you invite act on your behalf and suggests agreeing on rules with them outside the app. Our team guide covers how to split the inbox between people.

Remove someone from Shared access

You can revoke anyone’s access at any time from the Shared access screen, which also lists people you’ve removed. Blocking someone removes their access too.

How to use Shared access if someone invited you

Accept the invite from your notification. To work on the account, tap Switch next to your profile picture and pick it. You’ll see ads there even if you pay for ad-free Instagram.

To leave, switch to the shared account, open its profile, tap Menu, scroll to the bottom and tap Leave [account name]. You’ll need a new invite to come back.

Why Shared access isn’t showing on Instagram

If Instagram Shared access is not showing in your menu, go through these in order.

  1. Check your plan. Meta lists Shared access only in Meta One Advanced and higher, so start with the profile’s subscription.
  2. Look in the app. Shared access isn’t on Instagram’s website. When we checked on October 7, 2026, neither the web menu nor web settings had it.
  3. Update the app. Instagram’s help steps are written for the current app, so install any update first.
  4. Check the account itself. Meta offers Shared access only to accounts that meet its rules, and teen accounts can’t use it.

If you were invited but can’t find the invite, it may have expired, so ask for a new one. Check your own invite settings too. Tap the icon in the top right of your Shared access screen to see who can invite you. People you’ve blocked can’t invite you.

When Meta Business Suite is the better choice

For most small teams, Meta Business Suite is the better place to start. It’s free, and each teammate gets their own login there too. It also adds assignment and labels and brings Messenger and WhatsApp into the same inbox. Our guide to managing Instagram DMs as a team walks through the setup.

Shared access is worth paying for when your team works from phones in the Instagram app, and you also want what else comes with the plan, such as links in posts and reels. Our post on whether the Meta Business Suite inbox is enough covers when a team outgrows Business Suite.
